Man of the Year

Man of the Year

It was announced this morning that President-Elect Barack Obama is Time‘s Person of the Year. (Was it ever really a competition?) Among Time’s many interesting features, is one on artwork created about Barack Obama. One piece was featured here on The Obama Craft Project prior to the election–Arty Magee’s “Change” in change.

Change

(Does this mean we scooped Time? Hmmmmm…)

While we’d seen nearly every one of the pieces that was featured already, there were three works that we hadn’t seen before, and are certainly worth mentioning.

Udronotto‘s Barack Obama in Legos.

Zillycakes in Buffalo, NY made this Barack Obama out of 1,240 cupcakes.

And I can’t post it here because of copyright, but please do check out this newspaper mosaic from lumis. Time says that it was pieced together–although it may actually be digitized.

Lisa Anne Auerbach’s Knitwear

Portland peeps: It’ll be worth your while to read through this whole post, trust me.

I meant to post Lisa Anne Auerbach‘s work ages ago, I just spaced it completely, which is too bad… Lisa is an artist whose medium is knitting. And her messages are overtly political. Which is a good thing, because the juxitoposition of her almost girly knitwear with in-your-face political messages really works. She did a number of Obama-related pieces in the run up to the election, and participated in the Manifest Hope show in Denver during the Democratic National Convention.

Portlanders have the opportunity to hear Lisa talk about her work tomorrow, Thursday, December 4, at noon at an event at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in the Pearl District. This is a free event, and is open to the public. Here’s a link to the news release from PNCA and you can download the event flyer here.

We’ll see you there!

Battle of the Bands, Obama Style

We don’t watch football much–we’re basketball fans here. But, we usually catch the Southern University vs. Grambling State game each year because the marching bands are so awesome. The band performances are called the “Battle of the Bands” and they’re really amazing. This year, they had a distinct Obama flavor. Check it out:

(Yes, we know… Not a “craft” really, but the bands are so awesome, we think they count!)
