Great post. It's not the first time Shepard Fairey's been accused of this sort of thing. It's just that, although popular, his work hadn't hit the mainstream previously like it did with the Obama poster. I wonder what went on when Warhol appropriated the Campbell soup cans, or used images of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe in his artwork. I'm sure similar issues came up. It's funny though that Fairey always created or recycled imagery akin to old propaganda posters, and now what has become his most familiar image to those not familiar with his art, is a political poster, which, whether you were for or against Obama is still, by definition, propaganda.

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda" rel="nofollow">Wikipedia entry for propaganda</a>
And for a bit of irony:

Hey there--I've been thinking about your post all day, and it turns out my brother was too. Tonight we decided it would be fun to create an event to celebrate fair use, and draw attention to its positive place in art and craft. We've created Celebrate Fair Use in Art and Craft day, and I've posted about it on my blog: http://www.thehookandi.com/2009/02/05/fair-use-day/. I hope you'll join us!
