Change is a timely portrait of Barack Obama made from circulated coins. Beyond the visual pun, the work evokes a sense of historical significance. Although the piece is made entirely of coins, it could be considered a portrait made from portraits. Each coin is carefully arranged with the presidential portrait facing out. This subtle detial suggests that Obama is made from the same qualities as Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, and Roosevelt. Like Obama’s grassroots fundraising campaign, all of the coins for this sculpture were generously donated by friends and colleagues – who emptied their pockets and coin jars for me.

Lynae made the faces of this magnet set by hand, cutting out the star, stamping the lettering, firing, glazing and firing them again. Everything except the magnet itself was handmade. She’s donating all the profits to the Obama campaign. Check them out in her Etsy shop.

Karen, from South Carolina, made this scarf of handspun art yarn of wool & vintage fabrics and then crocheted the yarn and combined it with novelty yarns and strips of cotton fabrics. She’s currently selling this one-of-a-kind scarf, and another, similar one, on eBay. One hundred percent of the purchase price will be donated to the Obama campaign (and she’s offering free shipping).

Side note: Poor Karen, she emailed these items to us a few days ago and then eBay took her auction down. While her auctions are back up now, we still believe Meg Whitman’s behind it.

We received this press release today and are so excited about the Obamaware fundraiser!

On October 19th, 27 top ceramic artists will present “Obamaware,” a limited edition group of Obama/Biden-specific ceramics in an effort to raise money in for the Obama campaign. New York-based Studio potter Ayumi Horie organized the effort and will host the sale on her website, https://www.ayumihorie.com/obamaware.html.  The pots are by turns funny, hopeful, imaginative, witty, inspiring – and practical, including John Byrd’s commemorative Sarah Palin beer steins to Diana Fayt’s Victorian-style silhouettes of Obama accompanied by symbolic olive branches.  As participating sculptor Jeffry Mitchell remarked, making pieces for this project (“Elephants for Obama”) makes him feel he is doing what he knows how to do best in an effort to support an election we can’t afford to lose.  Potters have a long history of putting messages on objects people use every day – this is a literal example of politics around the “kitchen table” that politicians mention so often.  We can think of it as optimistic White House china: buy one, and our wish might come true.

It’s about time we’ve show Joe Biden some love here on the Obama Craft Project. Both caribou and wolves are hoping Joe Biden is the next Vice President of the United States, according to these delightful hand screen printed T-shirts from Portlander Sarah Giles. You can pick up either a men’s or women’s style shirt proclaiming either “Wolves for Biden” or “Caribou for Biden” from her etsy shop. There are only 75 of these stunning and detailed three-color letterpress prints, titled “Census,” by Brooklyn-based artist and wallpaper designer Dan Funderburgh (follow this link for a detailed image of this print and info about the artist), and at $30 each, we’re sure that they will go quickly. The proceeds from this piece (which is interesting also because it does not directly reference Senator Obama) will be donated by the artist to the Obama campaign. We are loving the literal and figurative nature of Fancy That! Boutique’s “Change” Purses. This wallets are made from vinyl with this images of various Obama artwork. This one is probably our favorite, but we also love this retro-looking version as well.
