Original Denyse Schmidt Quilt Obama Fundraiser

As Election Day draws nearer and nearer, we’re seeing more and more innovative and remarkable fundraising crafts in support of Senator Obama’s campaign. This is one is certainly special. This is a quilt made by none other than Denyse Schmidt and friends. (For more on Denyse, check out this excellent interview in American Craft Magazine from this Sept.) She believes this quilt is part of a long tradition of political quilting:

Long before women had the vote, they created quilts with political and commemorative themes. We are proud to participate in this honorable tradition.

You can enter to win this beautiful piece of Americana by making a $10 donation to this fundraising page on my.barackobama.com.

(Shout-out to Heather Ross for originally blogging about this fundraiser.)

A Quilt We Can Believe In

OBAMA 2008 by NancyinSTL.

Nancy in STL of (we assume) St. Louis, Missouri uploaded this phenomenal quilt block to The Obama Craft Project Flickr pool. Here’s what she has to say about this project:

I created this donkey quilt for the Thimble & Thread Quilt Guild’s 2007/2008 Challenge which required recycled textile materials to be used for the top and backing. Vintage (circa 1940′s -1950′s) decorator silk and silk blend fabric samples, including the small attached optional colorway swatches, were used for the quilt top. Notice that each of the corner stars are actually a different color. The “O” in OBAMA is pieced because I really wanted to use the violet color, but only a snippet of it was left on the swatch. The backing is a matching vintage green and white chintz. Since the batting did not have to be recycled, I planned to use 100% Cotton “Warm & Natural” batting, as shown in the photos of the basted quilt. Subsequently, I removed the basting and decided to use “June Tailor Cotton Blend Fusible” batting.

Well done, Nancy!

Quilted Obama Bags

“In the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.”

~Barack Obama

Group Shot 2 by Crafting For Obama.

Flickr user craftingforobama uploaded these bags to the Obama Craft Project Flickr pool, and all we can say is wow-ee! These are part of an ongoing project to raise money to support the Obama campaign. Here’s what she has to say (from her fundraising page on barackobama.com):

I am an everyday person with a Singer 401A, a lot of energy and the conviction that Barack Obama is the person who needs to be in the White House. Immediately. For once, everyday people can truly make that happen….

…This effort of Mad Stitchery will roll from right now through Nov. 4, 2008.

Like the man said, we *are* one people, we *are* one nation and if work together now *we can* heal this nation down the road, and work to improve the world.

First you have to believe it’s possible. Then you will find within yourself a way to make it so.

I have never done something like this before. This is my small contribution toward the effort to save our nation.

You can read more about this effort and find out how you can snag yourself one of these from craftingforobama while also supporting the Obama campaign, by following this link.

Showing Support Through a Love of Quilting

Kiandra pieced and quilted this Obama campaign T-shirt that is, no exaggeration, one of the most stunning examples of a handmade campaign T-shirt we’ve seen. Here is her message about this project:

know the issues…find a way to support your cause…and make sure you vote (what ever your choice!)
i believe in the power of the vote…and above all, i’m happy that so many more of our young people are getting involved.
we can elicit change! we can make a change!
one love…one voice!
Kiandra didn’t start out as a supporter of Barack Obama, and also has a very insightful and thoughtful post up (which also includes a photo of this when it was a work in progress) encouraging former Clinton supporters to support the Obama-Biden ticket.

Barack Mini Quilt

Hambone and Jennicakes made this mini-quilt, which has wonderful stitched details that are unmistakable in their resemblance to Senator Obama.
