Good Golly, This is Awesome!

Barack Obama portrait on velvet

The delightful Susan Beal spotted this amazing velvet portrait rendering of President Obama, created by Jennifer Kenworth (aka Juanita), at this weekend’s Crafty Wonderland. Does this mean that our president is as big as Elvis–the reining king of velvet portraiture–now?

(Yes, that’s a Mr. T doll in the foreground. In case you were wondering.)

Bean Portrait

Barack BEAN-bama by monkeycat62.

This is another Shepard Fairey-inspired piece, and–wowee–it’s made out of BEANS! Yes, beans. Flickr user monkeycat62 uploaded this to the Obama Craft Project Flickr pool and we almost passed out when we saw it! The shading and detail created by the beans of different sizes and colors is almost uncannily similar to the original. She’s entered it into the latest Craftster Challenge, which has a supermarket theme, and has posted details of her process right here. She says the purpose of this project is,

To get out the vote, inspire discussion, and act as my Obama poster since they were a limited edition run and I couldn’t get one.

Voting for this competition begins on Sunday, and since we have no shame in telling y’all how to vote anyway, we’d strongly suggest that you consider voting for this inspiring, ambitious piece.

Shout-out to Maimun Khan for alerting us to this one!
